Our IUCN connection

Most of InterEnvironment Institute's international work is done with or through IUCN, the  International Union for Conservation of Nature, www.iucn.org. The California Institute of Public Affairs (CIPA), which became InterEnvironment Institute in January 2010, began working with IUCN in 1972 and became a member in 1980.

We have been represented at the following World Conservation Congresses, formerly called General Assemblies:

  • 2016 Hawaiʻi
  • 2012 Jeju, Republic of Korea
  • 2008 Barcelona, Spain
  • 2004 Bangkok, Thailand
  • 2000 Amman, Jordan
  • 1996 Montréal, Québec, Canada
  • 1994 Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • 1990 Perth, Australia
  • 1988 San José, Costa Rica
  • 1984 Madrid, Spain
  • 1981 Christchurch, New Zealand
  • 1978 Ashkhabad, Turkmenistan, USSR
  • 1972 Banff, Alberta, Canada

From 1990-96 CIPA served as  the secretariat of one of IUCN's six (now seven) commissions, on Environmental  Strategy and Planning, then chaired by CIPA's President Ted Trzyna. From 2003-2024 InterEnvironment Institute served as the secretariat of the Urban Conservation Strategies Specialist Group of IUCN's World Commission on Protected Areas.

Several of the Institute's Board members and Fellows are involved in IUCN as individuals.
